Where to Surf Near Casablanca, Morocco (Without Pretending Casa Is a Reef Town)
Honest options for surfing near Casablanca — why Bouznika is the practical beginner beach, how the drive works, and when to skip a blown-out day.
By Mehdi Assiry ·

If you live in Casa or you landed at Mohammed V and typed where to surf near Casablanca Morocco, you are not looking for a poem about desert points. You want a beach you can reach, a wave that will not punish a first pop-up, and someone who will tell you when the Atlantic is a waste of petrol.
Here is the honest map from our side of the sand.
Casablanca is a city with an ocean, not a surf village
You can see water from the Corniche. You can even find people surfing urban beaches when the swell wraps in. That does not make Casa the right classroom.
City water has more users, more runoff after rain, more “is this actually a peak or a closeout in front of a café.” Intermediates with local friends make it work. Complete beginners usually learn faster out of town, on a beach break with a coach and a soft-top.
That is why we send day-trippers to Bouznika.
Why Bouznika is the default for beginners from Casa
- Sand under your feet when you fall
- Space compared with a famous south-coast circus
- A real lesson structure — private 300 dh / group 200 dh, board and wetsuit included
- A ding shop if you already own a board and it is leaking: repair in Bouznika
Read the beginner spot guide for how the banks behave. This article is about the city-to-beach decision.
The drive: treat it as part of the session
Maps will give you an optimistic number. Weekend midday traffic will not.
Leave early. Eat before you sit in the car. Bring water. A late arrival into a lesson means you skip the land warm-up and paddle confused. The ocean does not wait because Autoroute traffic was “unexpected.”
If you only have a short window, tell us when you book. We would rather move you to a morning that fits than pretend a 45-minute gap is a surf day.
Day trip vs sleep here
Day trip works when:
- The forecast is actually small and clean
- You can leave Casa early
- You are OK with one session and a drive home sandy and tired
Sleep in Bouznika wins when:
- You want two tides
- You are a group of friends
- You do not want the return drive to decide your mood
Our weekend villa package exists for that second group: 2 days / 1 night, guided sessions, ocean at the door. A full week is for people who are done negotiating with the highway.
Other names you will hear
Mohammedia, Skhirat, Temara, Dar Bouazza — all part of the same urban-Atlantic story. Locals have their attachments. I will not rank them like a tourist brochure. I will say: if you do not already have a friend who will be in the water with you, a structured lesson in Bouznika is safer than solo-exploring a new urban peak with a hardboard you bought yesterday.
Taghazout is not “near Casablanca.” That is a different trip, a different crowd, and often a different kind of wave. If you have ten days and a southbound plan, go. If you have Saturday, do not spend it on a bus.
When to stay home
Onshore wind, rain in the city, and a huge messy swell are allowed to be a no. Surfing near Casa is not a personality. It is a condition. We cancel or shift rather than take your money for a washing machine.
If you already have a board in the apartment in Maarif, check the dings before you drive. A leaking board on a first trip is how people decide they “hate surfing.” Glass it first.
Come when you can give the morning to the ocean. Bouznika will still be there after your meeting in Twin Center. The tide will not.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you surf in Casablanca itself?
- There is coastline and there are people who paddle out near the city, but Casa is a port metropolis. For a beginner lesson with space and sandbanks we can teach on, Bouznika is the practical answer most weekends.
- How far is Bouznika from Casablanca?
- It is a coastal drive that is easy on a quiet morning and slower on a busy Friday evening. Leave earlier than your maps app’s best case. A lesson start time is a tide time, not a suggestion.
- Is Dar Bouazza better because it is closer?
- Closer is not always kinder. We teach in Bouznika because we know the banks, the school setup, and the repair shop. If you already have a local crew in Dar Bouazza, surf with them. If you want a beginner structure, come to us.
- Should I rent a car?
- A car or a pre-booked taxi makes sense for a day trip. For a weekend of waves, staying in Bouznika beats two return drives.
