Private vs Group Surf Lessons on the Rabat–Casablanca Coast

Searches for private vs group surf lessons Rabat Casablanca coast usually mean this: you live in the city or you landed at CMN, you have a free morning, and you do not want to choose the wrong format and waste the tide.

Both formats we run in Bouznika are 1.5 hours with Association Bouznika SurfSchool. Both include a board and a wetsuit. The difference is attention, pace, and how the peak feels when more than one student is learning at once.

The numbers, without the sales fog

  • Private: 300 dh — one student (or sometimes a parent-and-small-child setup we agree on first), coach focused on you.
  • Group: 200 dh per person — shared coaching, shared peak, still a real lesson, not a herd.

Bring your own wetsuit and take 50 dh off either way.

If you are driving from Rabat or Casablanca, factor petrol and time. A lesson that does not fit your level is an expensive commute even when the sticker price is low.

When private is the right call

Book private if any of this is you:

  • You have never stood up and you do not want an audience.
  • You are anxious in the ocean (that is common and workable — we just should not stack extra bodies around you).
  • You have a shoulder, back, or knee that needs a modified pop-up.
  • You only have one session on this trip and you want it to count.
  • You are a strong swimmer who learns fast and will be ready for green waves in the same hour — a group will hold you in whitewater for people who are not there yet.

Private is not luxury theatre. It is simply one pair of eyes, one voice, and a peak chosen for you. On a fiddly sandbank, that matters.

When a group is actually better

Group is not the consolation prize.

  • Friends or a couple at the same level laugh more, push each other, and remember the session. That joy is part of learning.
  • On a small, clean summer morning, there is enough whitewater for everyone.
  • If you already had a first lesson and you mainly need volume — more waves, more pop-ups — a group can be plenty.

We keep groups small enough that I am not shouting from the beach like a tour guide. If the forecast is punchy, we will tell you to go private or to pick another day rather than pack a group into messy closeouts.

Rabat and Casablanca logistics

Bouznika is the practical beach for the two cities. You are not committing to a week in a surf village. That is exactly why format matters: you might only come once this month.

Leave early. Weekend traffic on the coast road is real. A 9:00 lesson does not mean leaving Casa at 8:45. Wet, late, and stressed is a terrible way to meet the Atlantic.

If you want the ocean at the door instead of a drive, look at a weekend or week villa stay and stack lessons without the highway.

A honest middle path

Some people book private first, group second. The private session installs the pop-up. The group session gives you waves and a bit of social courage. That pairing is how a lot of local beginners actually get hooked.

Kids are a separate conversation. A small child often needs private or a very small group with a parent in the water. Teenagers who already swim well often thrive in a group with friends. Tell us ages when you WhatsApp to book.

What neither format can do

Neither private nor group will make you good in one tide. They will make you safer and more likely to stand. Progress after that is repetition — more hours, not a more expensive label on the same ninety minutes.

If you are still choosing, answer one question: do you want a coach correcting you every wave, or do you want a shared morning with people you like? Book that. Then show up on time, with the small packing list, and let the beach break do the teaching.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private surf lesson in Bouznika?
300 dh for 1.5 hours, board and wetsuit included. It is the better choice if you have never stood up, if you are nervous in the ocean, or if you want the coach’s eyes on you the whole time.
How much is a group lesson?
200 dh per person for 1.5 hours, also with board and wetsuit. Group works well for friends at a similar level on a mellow day.
Can a mixed-level family share one group?
We can put a family in the water together, but if one person has never surfed and another is already turning, private or two groups will teach more. Mixed levels in one peak waste the stronger surfer and scare the beginner.
Is private worth it if I am only in Morocco for a weekend?
Usually yes. You have two or three sessions at most. Paying 100 dh extra to actually stand up is cheaper than a cheap group where you spend the hour waiting.
